It’s all in the details. If you need to host a sensational event and wow your guests or customers, then you better pay attention to all the little details. One of the most overlooked details? The lighting.
Even the greatest sales pitch, speech, or performance can be improved by the right kind of lighting and audio services. Lighting tells a story. It creates motion and energy. Lighting gives context and helps guide the audience’s attention. Yes, you can create a mood, display video content better, and create a visual experience at your event just by getting the lighting right.
Luckily for those hosting events, things in the lighting industry have grown in leaps and bounds. And so, before you get started with choosing the type of lighting you want at your event, ask yourself a few key questions:
- What kind of mood and color palette are you going for?
- What lighting equipment do you need to use, and how should you use it?
- Do you have existing video content you would like used, or do you want to create original content to fit in with the mood?
- What is your ‘star’ content, and how do you want it to stand out?
So, What’s on Offer in the Event Lighting Field?
LED Lighting is Tops
By now, we all know now that LED lights are about 10 times more efficient than tungsten lights. That means you will be using a lot less electricity while the lighting will last even longer hours. That’s a win-win. You can also use a combination of red, green blue, and white LEDs which will help you create a varied lighting scheme.
These adaptable, tubular fixtures are available in different lengths with varying amounts of LEDs. They can be joined, hung, stacked, or used to emit images. You can mount them on just about any structure; they can glow softly or pulse and ripple.
These are now digitally controlled and allow ease of movement that previously was unavailable. Another feature you can add to your moving heads is light, plastic gobos. Originally gobos were a piece of metal with a pattern cut into them. These would be placed in front of the light, to diffuse light and create shape and texture.
Moving head LED fixtures can be used as video projectors that can vary the focus, angle, width, brightness, and color of the video dynamically in real-time. The possibility of the effects used here is endless.
Details such as the size of your event’s space or the actual structure don’t need to limit or overwhelm you anymore. You can create beautiful, seamless light displays that wrap around an entire building or the backdrop you’re given with pixel mapping. Pixel mapping can give movement to a static stage and manipulate color on any and every level. With pixel mapping, you have the ability to create the exact look and feel you want with built-in effects or imported video that can be played on a loop.
What exactly is pixel mapping? Basically, it is the process of applying an image or video to a group of lighting fixtures. This offers many exciting applications for event lighting. Image pixel mapping is often used and is very effective. The fixtures are often square or rectangular and have anywhere between four to over a thousand individual LEDs. Video pixel mapping is when you send LEDs through the video source material, set to display across several fixtures at once – from simple screens to differently shaped fixtures.

I’ve always been curious about pixel mapping. Really hoping we get a client that can have the budget and theme that can fit it.

I like that you mentioned how lighting could give context and help guide the audience’s attention. We are going to hold a big birthday party for my sister at the end of the month and we are now preparing for it. We would definitely need some party equipment, so I should probably ask for entertainment lighting rental services first.
